Wildfires are a very real threat but we can proactively mitigate the risk and severity of wildfires by reducing the fuels that feed them.

Wildfire mitigation is a broad term referring to reducing forest fire fuels in order to lessen the intensity of fires when they occur.

Wildfire mitigation is something that can be done on both rural and residential properties and acreages.

Some mitigation methods include thinning trees, removing dead or diseased trees, removing the lower branches to try to prevent a crown fire by removing those ladder fuels that enable the fire to reach the tree tops.

Another way to slow the spread of a forest fire is to remove the ground fuels like dead branches, needles, and leaves that have fallen off trees. A common way to remove these fuels (dependent on wildfire conditions, weather, location etc.) is by collecting them in slash piles and burning them. When we burn slash piles we make sure to follow all of the regulations and safety procedures, this includes (but is not limited to) following fire bans, having fire fighting equipment on site and ready, having trained personnel to monitor while the fire is burning and after it is out to ensure it does not re-ignite.
